Why this journey is special
What makes VIA Rail — The Canadian unmistakable.
The Canadian is one of the world's great long-distance trains — four nights and five days from Toronto to Vancouver, crossing the Canadian Shield, the prairies, the Rockies and the BC interior in a continuous rail experience. Unlike Rocky Mountaineer, it is a true sleeper train with cabins, a dining car, a lounge car and a domed Park car at the rear. It is also dramatically less expensive — economy seating starts a fraction of any luxury rail product.
Frequently asked questions
Plan VIA Rail — The Canadian with confidence.
- Is the Canadian as scenic as Rocky Mountaineer?
- The Rockies section is comparable; the rest of the route is different — Shield lakes, prairies, and BC canyons. It is a more varied trip but with overnight segments through some scenic stretches.
- Are showers really included in Prestige only?
- Prestige cabins have private showers. Sleeper Plus cabins and berths use shared showers at the end of the car.
- How early should I book?
- Six to nine months for Prestige in summer or fall. Sleeper Plus berth and Economy have shorter booking windows but sell out for fall colour dates.
- Can I stop at Jasper and continue later?
- Yes — stopover tickets let you split the journey at any service stop. Jasper is by far the most popular split.
