In the north, two of the country's most distinctive heritage railways carry travellers into the Canadian Shield: the Agawa Canyon Tour Train from Sault Ste. Marie, and the Polar Bear Express from Cochrane to the roadless James Bay community of Moosonee.

Best time to travel
The Agawa Canyon Tour Train's fall-colour window is short and famous: typically the last week of September through the second week of October. The Polar Bear Express runs year-round (passenger service is limited; check Ontario Northland). The VIA Corridor is reliable year-round; visit Toronto and Ottawa in May or October for the best weather and lower hotel rates.

The Northern Ontario story works best as rail + road: take the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, then drive the Lake Superior north shore to Pukaskwa and Thunder Bay. The southern Ontario story works best as pure rail — the Corridor connects every major city efficiently.
