Best time to travel
Rocky Mountaineer operates mid-April through mid-October, with peak wildlife sightings in May/June and peak colour in late September. VIA Rail's Canadian runs year-round; winter departures cross the Rockies in deep snow, which is its own spectacle. Avoid late October through early April only if you specifically want Rocky Mountaineer.

VIA Rail's Canadian departs and arrives Vancouver Pacific Central, with no included hotel — most travellers add a Fairmont Pacific Rim or Loden night either side.
Rail in pairs beautifully with the Icefields Parkway road trip — arrive Banff by Rocky Mountaineer, pick up a car at the local agency, drive the Parkway to Jasper, and fly out of Edmonton. The Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler is another natural pairing, especially for travellers who want to add the Rainforest to Gold Rush route.
